Thousands of hard working men and women spend millions of dollars every year at Cabela’s. Yet Cabela’s chooses to use Bird Construction in Lacey, Washington and Vandervert Construction in Post Falls, Idaho to build their retail stores in these two locations. These contractors do not pay area standard wages to their workers.
Shame on a premiere company like Cabela’s that claims on one hand that it has “core values of integrity and respect for individuals” yet on the other they hire companies like Bird Construction and Vandervert Construction that do not pay their workers a living wage.
Currently, the Carpenters Union has a labor dispute with these two contractors because they do not pay all of their construction workers on all of their projects the full area standard wages and benefits. How can Cabela’s make million of dollars from the hard-earned pay of wage earners across this country, but not make the effort to support them in return by hiring responsible contractors that pay their workers a living wage?
The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters objects to substandard wage employers like Bird Construction and Vandervert Construction working in our communities. In our opinion, the community ends up paying the tab for employee health care. And low wages tend to lower general community standards thereby encouraging crime and other social ills.
Please call Dennis Highby, President and CEO of Cabela’s at 308-254-5505 and tell him to do all he can to change this situation. Let him know how important area standards are to you. Ask him to see that contractors building their stores pay the full area standard wages to all of their construction workers.
The members and families of the Carpenters Union thank you for your support.
You may call 253-945-8800 for more information. We are not promoting any work stoppages, or refusal to pick up or deliver goods or perform services.
